All business owners have exit options – some good – some not so good – and most importantly some appropriate to the business and some not !
The key is to select the most appropriate exit option for you & your business. For example, very few business owners should ever consider listing on the ASX or similar – as our model shows it is expensive, time consuming, risky and complicated – but it can bring a higher reward.
At the opposite end of the spectrum – family & friends ( and fools ) are a cheap, quick and easy option – not much due diligence involved, not a lot of expense to be incurred and as a result a fairly low price is often the outcome.
This leaves most small business owners with the sweet spot in the middle of the model – selling their database ( for example, a real estate rent roll ) , selling to other shareholders and trade sales – these are by far the most common buisness sale for most owners. They bring a combination of some complexity and effort ( including cost ) but also bring a reasonable return or price upon sale !
We spend most of our time working with clients in this area – maxmising the value of your business to acheive an exit – often by selling down to key personnel within the business.
